A Primer on Gear, Equipment, and Classes

Boxing has long remained one of the most popular sports in the world. Legendary fighters like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Manny Pacquiao, and Floyd Mayweather, along with many other stars, have brought worldwide fame and recognition to the sport. It has even spawned multiple award-winning movies like Rocky and Million Dollar Baby, that encompassed the emotion of what it is like being a fighter inside the ring.

Sometimes referred to as “the sweet science,” boxing is a combination of skills, techniques, and conditioning that comes from hours and hours of training. And that conditioning is what makes it a killer workout. At the same time, walking into your first boxing class can be intimidating: What should you bring with you? Which kind of class is the best choice? Should you even wear shoes? And then, what about gloves?

When choosing a boxing gym, you’ll want to make sure they have all the equipment you need to get proper training such as a diverse array of bags to work on your power and technique. This includes heavy bags, speed bags, teardrop bags, double-end bags and more. This variety of equipment is what really sets the stage for the serious conditioning you’ll experience when you take on boxing as a workout. Ideally, your gym will also provide equipment for additional conditioning such as free weights and traditional machines for strength training. This makes it a whole lot easier for you to work out, because you never have to make more than one stop on your way home from work.
You’ll need to get the proper boxing gear before you training. Most gyms and boxing clubs (including BDC) will have extra gear for you to use when you’re first starting out, but you’ll want to get your own as soon as possible. This ensures a proper fit and better quality. Here is what gear you should get in the first place:

  • Gloves
  • Wraps
  • Shoes
  • Apparel
  • Safety accessories

We hope that this short guide will help you make the initial decision what gear and equipment to have during your first training in a boxing club or gym.
